Sinusitis The Maxillary sinus/antrum is a hole in the upper jaw approximately the size of a golf ball. It is lined by a layer of cells (epithelium), which is like a balloon with the neck opening into the nose at a slightly upward angle when you are standing. Inflammation of this layer (sinusitis) causes secretion of fluid into the sac, which can become infected, turning into mucus like pus. Because of its proximity, this build up can cause pain in the upper teeth and jaws. Treatment is divided into two options depending on the severity:- Physical There are three facets of treatment each of which is important to successful drainage Inhalation: Inhale steam + Menthol & Eucalyptus, the heat softens the mucus, the Menthol& Eucalyptus causes the epithelium to shrink facilitating drainage. Posture: Lie down on your side and position your head without a pillow so that the drainage is aided by gravity. Heat: Wrap a hot water bottle in a towel and apply to your cheek. This will expand the air within the sinus, blowing the mucus into your nose. Chemical Antibiotics … not generally very effective as the sinus is a hole and therefore has no blood supply. |
