Hypersensitivity .. Exaggerated response to a normal stimulus i.e. Hot, Cold, Sweet.

This may be Physiological or  Pathological

Physiological .. a tooth may be temporarily extremely sensitive for natural reasons e.g. Sudden temperature change e.g. arrival of Winter, Change over from insensitive baby teeth to sensitive adult teeth in children, Trauma (damage such as a blow) etc.

Treatment

  •  Alleviate the sensitivity by avoiding contact

  •  The use of a de-sensitising agent e.g. Sensodyne toothpaste, oil of cloves, tincture of Myrrh etc.   This agent should be applied  to the area before going to bed by drying the tooth prior to applying the medicament.   Should this treatment be ineffective or the sensitivity worsen consult us as soon as possible

Pathological .. due to decay or damage exposing the dentine or pulp (nerve)

Treatment

  • This will need urgent attention and may involve treatment by the dentist.

If in doubt always consult us, you are the only one who knows the severity of your problem.
